Evoking the spirit of Coltrane at his most tender…

Jazzwise

The final of this years gigs in partnership with Manchester Jazz Festival 2023!

One of the UK’s finest and most exciting saxophonists, Nathaniel Facey is a prominent figure on the European jazz scene, and has worked with the likes of Jack DeJohnette, Jason Moran and Courtney Pine. His is a truly unique sound that, while reminiscent of giants such as Charlie Parker, Eric Dolphy and John Coltrane, is undeniably his own; full of ferocious passion and lyrical mastery. A founding member of the multi award-winning group Empirical that have toured the world, audiences are constantly blown away by Facey’s command over his instrument and the stage. He is undoubtedly always one to watch, whatever line-up he is involved with, and is sure to bring an intensity that is rarely seen in musicians.

This fire-breathing trio comprising long-term collaborators Tom Farmer and Shane Forbes play with a big sound, a deeply swinging rhythmic sense, adventurous musicality and broad sensibility that sets the imagination alight. Nathaniel’s original compositions have deep roots in the broad jazz tradition as well as contemporary styles, and are paired with unique takes on stalwart songs with great blues/soul filled history. With shared years of experience playing together, the trio create music with a powerful & effervescent sense of imagery, with a level connection, interaction and spontaneity that is rare to find.

Cutting and fiery, and certainly not afraid of extended bouts of self-expression
