Julian Siegel Quartet

  • The Yard 11 Bent Street Manchester United Kingdom (map)

“Expressive direct music… tightly wound post-bop, pensive improv. and more”

John Fordham, The Guardian

On Monday 17th January, for our first show of 2022, we’re thrilled to be kicking off another outstanding NQ Jazz season with the Julian Siegel Quartet, piloted by the eponymous BBC Jazz Award winning saxophonist and composer, along with Oli Hayhurst on double bass, Gene Calderazzo on drums and, for this particular performance, special guest Ross Stanley on piano.

The Quartet’s most recent record, VISTA - home to ten of Julian’s original compositions, along with a racing arrangement of Bud Powell’s standard piece, Un Poco Loco - was released in 2018, each track evidence of how effortlessly the gang are able to together shift gears, gracefully guiding the mood from dizzyingly lively to languorous, from subdued to unstoppably spirited, rendering it a fast favourite in any jazz fan’s collection and earning it a spot in Jazzwize’s Top 20 Jazz Albums of the Year.

With a formidable history of performing both at home and across the continent, featured on the line up of many of Europe’s most highly-esteemed jazz festivals - boasting slots, within the UK, at Bristol International Jazz and Blues Festival, Manchester International Blues Festival and Love Supreme, among others - we can’t wait to welcome in the new year with such a winningly accomplished Quartet - and, of course, we hope with you!
