"You're instantly drawn to the atmosphere and feeling of mystery in his music" Soweto Kinch (BBC Radio 3)
Unified Theories is the ambitious new project by guitarist/composer Ant Law. It is his sixth album as a leader, featuring ten new compositions (including one contrafact on a well known jazz standard). The title has a double meaning. The first refers to people in the world (or in this case, these four musicians) deciding on agreed, common ground as a starting point - a unified theory - rather than focusing on differences. Much of the music evolved from musical experiments or theories such as: “What happens if we combine two tonal centres?” (Stereopticon), “What if a rhythmic cycle had the same shape as a Pacific island?” (Nikumaroro) or “What happens if we use this melodic palette but incorporate some wrong colours?” (Colours).
"The fireworks, which fluctuate confidently between rock, funk, and jazz, offer space for every instrumentalist. The band also excels in its almost chamber-music ensemble playing." Jazzthetik (DE)
